๐ŸŽฎ DevBlog Week 9 (08/04/2025) โ€“ Building the tutorial scene and level design

In this week's devblog, I have decided to do more level design because I have a playtest before my final submission.

I want to ensure that the first level is the tutorial for the players, explaining the game mechanics, etc.. Also, I am using an asset Toon Adventure Island and some of my assets.

The first tutorial will start with a small quest guiding the player where to go, eventually leading to a NPC.  the npcs will have many quest and rewards for the player, how ever I would like to say that there isn't a inventory system or shopping system but in future development I will implement those for more game mechanics. but for the moment, the player can only get the quest and some small rewards.

I created a grass asset to act as the plane for the world, and I would duplicate them until I had a flat surface.   I  then added grass, trees, and rocks to each plane and when I was creating the level and bake the lighting it would take a long time. and the performance was being very bad and laggy.

Doing this was  very stupid of me, and so I decided to go with a terrain.  Before, the player wouldn't be able to walk on terrains for some odd reason, but all I had to do was fix the player's ground check script so I could be able to walk on the terrain.

This is how it is looking so far for the first tutorial mission.

Using the terrain tool is very useful at the moment for level designing, and the light baking is much faster now. Before, it would say it would take 3 to 4 days to bake, and I would wait hours, and it would always stay at 0%. so doing the terrain was a smarter choice to go with. I just need to mess around with it more and create more levels  for this open-world game
